While trying to set the fuses of my DIY Arduino Uno with a ATMega328, I got the following error message:
avrdude: AVR Part m328p not found – and then a list of all the parts that are available.
After a couple of hours of research it turned out that there is a really quick fix for this. No need to update or anything!

It turns out this simply means that the ATMega328P is not defined in the AVRDUDE configuration file. But you might ask yourself why, beceause the Arduino IDE seemed to program 328P based boards just fine.
Well in my case I had two, and possibly more, AVRDUDE installations. One I had installed myself, and one that came with the Arduino IDE.
The one I installed was an outdated version that didn’t include support for the 328P, but it was used by default by all programs (except for the Arduino IDE of course) and terminal commands.
So you have two options: you can either update AVRDUDE (recommended of course, but you’ll have to compile it yourself, which is kind of a hassle), or you can edit the configuration file to include the 328P.

Editing the configuration file

Open the default AVRDUDE config file (on Mac OSX systems it is located at /usr/local/etc/avrdude.conf) and paste the following code:

AVRDUDE now knows the ATMega328P and you should be able to program it.
